Watching other peoples videos from autocrossing last year to try to deal with my withdrawals and suddenly I find myself pulling up to the start line.
This video is from the Exocet run by one of the heads of my region. Its build with the drivetrain from a stock 99 Miata and is on slicks. I rode along in it at the last event of the year and it is a completely different game compared to my little hatchback.
The venue is the special event we ran on the oval at Thunder Road. I had tons of fun but was really slow because I did not have the tire for the speeds we were doing. For me it was a lift and change to second to get it to turn back up the hill and then it was flat all the way to the other end. Only 115hp and I was still reaching 55+ coming off of 4 (downhill runs are your friend).
Anyway, here’s the video if you want to watch the run:

I’m really hoping we get the opportunity to do this again next year. Tons of fun and I would really like to have another go with more than one event under my belt. I need to get a go pro for next time to record my own runs.
I’m also really antsy because I’m finally going to get to hit the ice on Saturday and am basically counting down the minutes to then.

I need to find some autocross close to me here in Los Angeles. I think its stupid that they dont run in the winter since we dont have winter here. It was 86 degrees the other day on the way to the airport!! But its also just different from when I was in NJ and had three different regions within an hour of home. Things are a bit more spread out here and with traffic, the closest regions I have found are 2-3 hours away. And cheaper events seem harder to find. If I am going to pay $80+ for an autocross I’d rather spend like $250 on a cheap track day instead. If only track days could be signed up for day of like autocross, I hate planning ahead lol.

My region runs most of their autocrosses about 2 hours away from me and the ice events are about 30 mins away. We’re a small region and usually see 30 entries per event which means you get 12-15 runs each. For $40 an event with membership it’s well worth it to me.

Oh yeah for sure. I had one event that was $35, one was $50, and the other $65. And if I drove a few hours, there were events for $30 a pop that I usually did. That sure makes things affordable! Im spending more on gas at that point and I dont mind that expense when I can get 30mpg with the Miata on the highway.

The Mini is interesting in that is seems to get 30 mpg no matter what I do. I filled up before leaving for the Thunder road event and also ran an event at our usual location the next weekend. Did about 90 highway miles, 140 miles to and from our usual location on some fun backroads, and 25-30 autocross miles (plus all the idling you do at an autocross). When I filled up after getting home from the last autocross I calculated I got 29.8mpg on that tank.

Haha how the hell is that possible? I once calculated 10mpg in my Miata between 2 days of autocross. Granted one was ~30 runs of a test and tune, plus I did quite a bit of idling. And now with my commute being all canyon roads, I have been averaging about 24mpg regularly. My “best” on street mileage has been 18mpg during a day at the Tail of the Dragon. It was funny to me because the day before while driving through Virginia I managed 35mpg.
